The Top 5 Reasons YOU Should Learn to Embroider

Have you ever wondered why Embroidery didn’t die with the dark ages, or the very least the 1950’s? Maybe you have been curious about it and just need a little push to try it. Let me give you that push by giving you 5 SOLID reasons you should embroider.

1: YOU CAN TAKE IT ANYWHERE AND DO IT ANYTIME

I enjoy a LOT of hobbies, but I cannot do them everywhere like I can embroidery. It is not possible to bake something yummy while I wait for my kid at the dentist office or to pack up all my art journaling supplies and work on a page while I watch my kids ride their bike. With the right supplies, you really can take it with you anywhere…long car rides, parks, soccer games ect. It is way more fun and productive than checking Facebook on my phone. I LOVE it!

2:IT IS SO CHEAP, SERIOUSLY!

Once you are set up with your basic supplies…which by themselves are not that expensive either…the cost to maintain comes basically from four things: embroidery floss, fabric, craft batting and patterns. First of all, you do not run out of those things quickly. Even I don’t and I am embroidering all the time!

Floss costs 39 cents. That is all. Let’s say you have 10 dollars to spend on your hobby…in embroidery that will get you 25 different colors of embroidery floss! What will that get you in scrapbooking? Or even, I hate to say it, quilting?

Fabric varies in price, but if we look at Muslin it is typically around 1.99 a yard. A yard of fabric when you are embroidering lasts for a lot of projects! Plus there are always coupons at JoAnn’s so you usually can get it cheaper.

The next thing you need in maintaining is craft batting. It is optional really, but I cannot live with out it. My favorite is Warm and Natural and usually costs about 10 bucks for craft size. Once again, you can coupon this. It also lasts for a lot of embroidery projects and is not necessary for all embroidery projects. As you know, I embroider a lot, and I haven’t bought more batting for 4 months and I have at least 2 more months worth of projects left.

Finally, patterns. Thanks to the internet, and this website…shameless plug…there are so many free patterns out there! Thanks to Etsy, you can find darling cheap embroidery patterns 5 dollars and under. This just does not have to be a big cost at all.

3: IT IS AN EASY WAY TO ADD PERSONALITY TO THINGS YOU LOVE OR USE

Sometimes people think embroidery is useless because it is just pillows or hoop art which you may or may not like. I hope I can show you that there is so much more to embroidery! You can put it anywhere that is fabric! Honest!

Here are some ideas of things you can customize with embroidery:

4:IT GIVES YOU AN EXCUSE TO WATCH A LOT OF SHOWS!

This one is a little silly I know, but we all enjoy a good binge watching now and then right? Well, you don’t feel so bad about it when you are completed Christmas presents for family and friends…at least I don’t.

5: EMBROIDERY GIVES YOU A CHANCE TO BE CREATIVE

I know a lot of hobbies give you the chance to be creative, but so does embroidery. You can try different stitches, colors, fabrics, looks and really express yourselves. There is so much more to embroidery these days than birds and flowers. Check out some examples from around the web of interesting and fun embroidery. I am sure you can find something to love out there no matter who you are!
