Working with business coaches has opened my eyes in many ways. I have learned things that have helped me in life and in my business. Maybe some of these lessons will help you, too.
CHARGE WHAT YOU’RE WORTH.
So many people (including myself) want to just give away their services to the world. The truth is, you can’t give away everything and stay in business. People want to pay you for what you do for them. When your clients feel like they owe you something, there’s an uncomfortable feeling created. Don’t make your clients feel uncomfortable by giving away too much. When your clients are begging to pay you, it should be a sign that you’re either not charging enough or that they really value what you’re doing for them. So, let them pay you what you’re worth. You’ll all be happier.
I tend to work too hard for too long each day. It’s important for my mental stability to be able to have some down time each week. Something that’s just for me. I also need to choose what kind of people I will work with, what type of work I will and will not do, and what hours I will be available. Everyone should set limits that keep them happy and productive. Your limits will be different than mine, but they are important. Without limits, we end up feeling like we have no control over our lives and we resent working. That’s not a fun position for anyone to be in.
When you’re having fun, your clients can tell. The more you enjoy your work, your play, your interactions with your clients, and life in general, the happier you will be. (And, the happier your clients will be.) After all, who wants to work with a grumpy person?
Set a schedule for your work and stick to it. I was working ridiculous hours for quite a while, hoping to finally get done and be able to spend time with my family. However, I didn’t have a schedule, and I wasn’t limiting my work day. A friend of mine told me it was my own fault, after I had complained about how long I was working. She said all I had to do is turn off my computer at a certain time each day. I tried it, and it worked! I finally had time for me again. I enjoyed my day because at the end of it all, I could do what I wanted to do. I finally had time to practice piano, sing, play with my daughter, connect with my family and friends, and sit back and enjoy a movie with my husband. Of course the work will still be there in the morning and you can start right where you left off. You may need to be more generous in your time estimates to begin with, but the quality of life improves so much that it’s well worth it.
APOLOGIZE WHEN YOU MAKE A MISTAKE.
Own up to it and apologize. Don’t make excuses or blame other people, just admit when you’ve made a mistake and move on. Everyone is going to make mistakes. We’re not perfect. So, when those mistakes happen, apologize, make it right if you can, and move on.
HAVE FUN AND BE YOURSELF.
People who like you will be your best clients, anyway. So, don’t try to be someone you’re not. Just enjoy who you are and celebrate your talents and skills in a way that brings like-minded people running to you.
